Alfredo Melendez / Instructor
Technical skill and creativity. The two elements that when paired, make for those dances we absolutely gush about and later, fondly reminisce. Saturday’s lessons with Alfredo will focus on the technical skill and mechanics of the below topics. Sunday’s workshops will demonstrate how to play with those tools, break into our creative sides to inspire and fashion some fabulous dances.
A Tournée of Turns!
In the world of partnered dancing, there are fundamentally 3 types of turns we do within partnership: Turns that a) are stationary, b) are binary, and c) travel. Over the two sessions, we will explore the differences between each type and how to safely dance into and out of them. And yes, we will touch on spotting and making sure you’re not spinning yourself into oblivion.
Multi-task-ular Dancing
Psst…I got a secret: we can’t actually multi-task. We can make it seem like we do, but our attention is always 100% on one thing - we just get REALLY good at switching between things. We can consciously make this a powerful dancing tool for an amazing dance experience! We’ll start with what it means to dance for yourself, the music, or the partner, and then we will apply the tools that make that happen as we dance.
The Power of Words
Words can be powerful; words can affect; words can influence. We are going to take words that impact us personally as we listen to music and externalize them with our partners. On the other end of it, we will cultivate empathetic dance skills to receive those vibes. Get ready for all the dance feels!

The Mathematics of Syncopations
We’ll break down exactly what syncopations are, create a list of elements that can be used for any pattern, and show the “whys and hows” of how syncopations work and where to put them into your dancing. This is a really fun class that will open your eyes. Do you want more footwork, vocabulary, style, and rhythm? This is the class for you.
Rhythmic Skills for Partnering: The Foundation of Good Dancing
Guess what? New moves don’t make you a “better” dancer. Skillfully applying rhythm to new (or old) moves makes you an awesome dancer! In this class, we will reawaken your feet, hips, ribs -along with your understanding and imagination of how to use them. Plus we’ll share our secrets for communicating to your partner.
How to Make EVERY Dance Better
… and how to maybe have the best dance of your life - tonight! You have to experience it - and - we can’t tell you about this class because that would ruin the surprise. We LOVE this class.
Connection Theory
Fusion dancing isn’t “doing anything”. We need the highest level of connection because style and movement can change instantly. In this class, we'll show you how the *natural* movement you use in everyday life can be hacked into dancing so that your partner ‘gets it’. We will show you how to pick up on body movement and connection cues to connect to almost anyone regardless of style.
Style Sequencing
Fusion dancing can move through different styles of dance within a song. This is one way we find new ways to move to music that is not genre specific. Let's have fun learning how to flow seamlessly from one dance to another.
Opposites Attract
Who hasn't wanted to try dancing the opposite role? You can usually find the folks who do this at any dance; we gravitate to each other and play. How do we switch roles without interrupting connection and flow? How do we decide who is leading who -and when and for how long? Come and find out in this workshop, er, we mean "playshop.”
